What Are Conventions?

Wednesday, June 01, 2016

One of the best parts about sorority membership is the variety of opportunities it provides. Not only will you make lifelong friendships within your own chapter, you also will have the chance to connect with sisters from around the world. One such opportunity is attending convention.

Conventions are large programs hosted by the individual inter/national organization. All the chapters and alumnae associations/clubs come together to learn more about and grow in appreciation for — their organization and to develop as leaders. Every chapter sends representatives from their campus, typically council officers or those in leadership positions.  In addition, all collegians and alumnae of the sorority are welcome to attend convention.

While at convention, sorority members attend educational sessions and workshops on a wide variety of subjects, from personal development to chapter operations to recruitment. They learn about organizational policies and best practices for executing their positions. There are opportunities to socialize, network and have fun, too. Attendees meet sisters from throughout the U.S. and Canada and strengthen their bonds of sisterhood. They also interact with the headquarters staff and inter/national officers. In addition, organizations award outstanding chapters and recognize individual accomplishments at convention.

Most conventions take place every other year during the summer. In June 2016 alone, 10 sororities are hosting their conventions throughout the United States. During non-convention years, most organizations hold smaller regional conferences, similar in structure and purpose. As you consider your journey as a sorority woman, consider the outstanding opportunity convention attendance provides for leadership development and as a chance to expand your sorority experience.
