Being Authentic During Recruitment

Friday, September 08, 2017

Be yourself.

Recruitment can be a stressful time, but it can be even more stressful if you are worrying about fitting the sorority girl image. Relax. There is no perfect dress or conversation topic that is the magic key to get into a sorority. Wear clothes that are you and make you feel comfortable. Talk about what your interests are and what you like to do, and you will have genuine and easy conversations. Be honest about what you want of sorority life and look for chapters that match your values. Be authentic and you will be able to find the sorority where you truly feel at home.

Ask questions.
Most people think that recruitment is so the sorority can get to know and decide if you should be a member or not, but really they are trying to impress you just as much as you are trying to impress them. They need to get to know you, but this is also your opportunity to discover what each sorority is all about. If academics are important to you then ask the members what resources they have to supplement your learning. Tell them your major and more than likely they will point out someone with the same major that can help you. If you are interested in playing intramural sports, ask which ones they take part in. Sororities are also great opportunities to take on leadership roles; you can express that during recruitment and members will tell you what positions they have and what you might be interested in.

Don't let others influence your decision.
Keep an open mind throughout the week and you will end up where you are supposed to be. You shouldn't set your heart on one sorority just because you heard it was the best on campus. Recruitment is about you. Your goal should be finding women you want to spend the majority of your time with for the next four years and an organization to belong to for the rest of your life.
