How to Brand Yourself

Friday, August 17, 2018

The start of August can mean a time of change. For some of us, one of the biggest changes is happening - the transition from high school to college. This is the perfect opportunity - especially if you’re thinking about participating in sorority recruitment - to take a step back and ask yourself about your personal brand.

Your personal brand is who you want to be and how you present yourself to the world. Ask yourself “Who am I? What do I value? Who do I want to portray myself as?”

Personal branding is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. It's essentially the ongoing process of establishing a specific image or impression in the mind of others about an individual, group, or organization.

Why is personal branding important?

For most sorority members, their personal brand is often tied to values. So if you’re going to go through recruitment, it helps to know what you value — what is important to you. Everything you consume or post on social media should relate to your values. This will help you prepare for recruitment and show chapter members a glimpse of who you are.

In addition, your personal branding is important because:
  • Short term: You’re in what can be a vulnerable time period where you’re trying to figure out who you are because you’re being exposed to something new. Identifying what you value and how you want to be perceived can help your self-image and self-esteem.
  • Long term: Your future career relies on knowing your brand
    • People are Googling you at every stage of your career
    • More than half of employers won't hire potential candidates without some sort of online presence today
    • Helps distinguish yourself from your competitors
    • Can lead to interviews, job placements, promotions, and more
When you’re ready to share your personal brand with the world, the quickest way to build your brand is through social media. Once you’ve established what your brand is, create social media content surrounding that brand. Look for examples through the most famous instagrammers’ pages. Your goal with social media is to create content that anyone who knows you can see the content and automatically associate it to you. For example, if you are a person who often travels, your content should be stunning landscapes and extraordinary adventures. Or if you’re a fashion guru, create content showing off the unique style you have or where your most recent purchases were.

Social Media Tips:
  • Be genuine - People follow you to see you, so don’t try to be someone you aren’t. Focus on what makes you… well, you!
  • Know your target audience - create content that is aimed towards what your followers want to see. Are you philanthropic? Studious? Adventurous? Show it off! They want to see you do your thing.
  • Keep an aesthetic - Everyone has an aesthetic. Find yours! Keep your feed pleasing by 1) using the same editing style on all of your posts 2) mixing up the type of content you’re posting - go from a close up photo to a wide shot 3) make it easy on the eyes - you don’t want to have too much happening on your feed.
  • Create constantly - set aside time to capture the things that are happening in your life. Even if not everything you capture is post-worthy, it’s good to capture just in case.
At the end of the day, what matters is being genuine to who you are, both in your personal life and your personal brand.
