During your collegiate years, recruitment is one of the best experiences you can have. Everything is exciting from decorating your recruitment room, the themed outfits, taking pictures with your sisters, and most of all meeting college women who are interested in joining a sorority. Recruitment was by far my favorite time as a collegiate member because I had the opportunity to ‘interview’ a young woman who could possibly be my future sister. I was filled with energy and excitement, and it is a memory that I will always cherish.

Recruitment season has started for some universities, and I could not be more excited for them. However, it is looking very different this year. Collegiate women may be talking to potential new members through a screen rather than face to face. It is something that has never been done before, but that is okay. Everyone can still have a great experience! Here are some tips for making virtual recruitment fun and exciting.

1. Decorate Your Room

If you are going to be participating in online recruitment, then there is a possibility you might be in your dorm room for an entire day. Make sure to decorate your bedroom with crafts, lettered apparel, posters, lights, etc. The last thing people need to see is a messy bedroom. Video backgrounds are always a great resource, but make sure to find something that matches your recruitment theme! You can also see if your organization has provided any guidelines and resources for virtual backgrounds.

2. Have Notes by Your Screen

You are going to talk to a lot of college women during recruitment, and sometimes the conversation may be staggered. This is normal. Virtual Recruitment provides the opportunity for collegiate members to have notes on the side or on their screen. These notes can include questions to ask, conversation topics, and quotes to help relieve stress! It can be overwhelming, but it never hurts to be prepared. Write down some topics to chat about, so when that time comes, you’ll be ready!

3. Separate Yourself from Distractions

You don’t want to be in an area where you won’t be focused on your conversation. Find a place where there are no other noises, distractions, people, or anything that will take you away from the conversation. Staying in your bedroom, where it is calm and quiet, is a good area to settle during recruitment.

4. Laptop Check

It is very important that you test laptop gears before recruitment weekend. You will not know what problems might occur in the middle of your conversation, so it is crucial that you test run everything before recruitment weekend. Try setting up a quick Zoom call with a few sisters and check that your microphone, camera, and internet connection are working properly. Whether it be Zoom or Google Classrooms, make sure your laptop is fully functioning

5. Have Fun

Recruitment is an exciting time during your collegiate years, so make it memorable. Just because recruitment is on your laptop doesn’t stop you from having a good time. Connect with as many college women as you can and tell them your story. Let them know what it is like to be a sorority woman and share all the wonderful experiences you have had.
