Sororities offer the opportunity to make the most out of your college experience, from making lifelong friends to giving back to the community through service activities, there is something for everyone. Your time spent in a sorority is truly what you make of it, and the best advice I have is to take advantage of all the opportunities presented to you!

Building Confidence and Skills

I joined a sorority during a time in my life where I didn’t feel like I was taking part in activities that challenged me and encouraged me to grow. I knew being in a sorority offered the opportunity to take part in leadership positions, and that was something I was nervous to do. After I joined, I challenged myself to run for an officer position in my chapter and I won! The entire experience taught me about the value of having confidence in myself. Beyond that, holding a leadership position also taught me about the importance of communicating well with those I collaborate with, and how to manage my time effectively to complete all of my tasks as both a college student and a leader within my chapter.

While I joined knowing I wanted to push myself to be a leader, there are many other ways to obtain skills in a sorority without running for a leadership position. Attending events, being involved on a committee and volunteering all provide useful skills that allow you to step out of your comfort zone. That is the beauty of sorority membership. You can choose which activities are right for you and will help you grow.

National and Local Opportunities

During my junior year of college, I chose to apply to take part in a PR campaign for my national sorority organization. Out of hundreds of applicants, I was one of 12 chosen to visit my sorority’s headquarters, meet the staff and take part in video and photoshoots! In addition to exploring a new city for a few days, I was able to meet so many incredible and inspiring women who I still keep in contact with today. Being in the campaign remains one of the best experiences I have ever had, and if I hadn’t applied, I would have missed out on an incredible opportunity.

Joining a sorority means joining something bigger than yourself. Because I was part of my chapter, I had a chance to participate in this national campaign. In addition to opportunities like I had, sororities offer scholarships, leadership and educational opportunities and volunteer and service activities. These national events allow you to meet other sorority women from around the country and grow your skills at the same time. Taking advantage of these opportunities is a great way to get the most out of your undergraduate sorority experience.

Sororities offer so many chances to take part in experiences that will teach you new skills, and take you out of your comfort zone! If you take advantage of the opportunities presented to you as a sorority woman you will see the returns in your confidence, skills, networking abilities and in your care and concern for others. Joining a sorority helps elevate who you already are and help you become the person you want to be.
