As sorority women, we are constantly acting as representatives for our organization. I was a marketing major in college, and one of the things that I learned is that we market a company by the way we act. Others will view your company the same way they look at you. The same thing goes for sororities, you represent your organization’s values through decision making, words and actions. No matter if we are on campus, at an internship or with friends and family, we are always wearing our letters.
Following Your Values
The best way to market your sorority without wearing your letters is by expressing your values through your actions. Sorority women take pride in their values and express them every day, no matter where they are. Alpha Sigma Tau’s values are graciousness, respect, intellect, connections, and excellence. I live by those values every day and they guide all decisions I make. Now how exactly do I represent my values?
1.) Graciousness
I am gracious to others by providing friendly, safe and honest relationships. This includes my friends, family, co-workers and fellow fraternal brothers and sisters.
2.) Respect
I respect my peers’ opinions, beliefs and values by not judging them, and not forcing them to do what I am interested in. Each individual is unique and deserves the respect to be heard and valued.
3.) Intellect
I am an eager learner and have the drive to develop the knowledge that I can do become successful.
4.) Connections
I built my network of sorority women from different organizations. I will continue to build my connections with my peers because I love meeting new people and enjoy listening to people’s stories about their goals, dreams and visions for the future.
5.) Excellence
I continue to build excellence for myself, by performing well at my job. Setting myself up for success is the best way that I create my road to excellence. I am also a delegate for my local panhellenic alumnae chapter, so I can help collegiate women build their road to success and be an inspiration to them.
Think about your values or those of your organization and consider how you live those values every day. Your values help guide your actions and, in turn, shape how others view you and your organization.
Your Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Your actions determine who you are as a person. For instance, during my collegiate years, I was very involved with philanthropy and becoming a leader on my campus. I attended as many events as I could, including the National Greek Leadership Association Conference (NGLA) to better enhance my network and leadership skills. My sisters and others in the fraternal community saw my passion and love I have for the sorority community. Through my actions, I was able to market my letters in a positive and empowering way to others on campus and in my chapter.
You market your sorority through your actions. This allows others to learn what the sorority community stands for by seeing how you act. This can invite potential members to join and leads others in the fraternal community to follow in your footsteps.
