When I made the decision to go through sorority recruitment, I had no idea what I would be in for. I was a transfer student who wanted to move closer to home and focus on classwork. But, I didn’t quite know exactly what I wanted to do yet. I had changed my major when transferring to Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) from the University of Louisville. Then, before classes started, I changed it again. Being in Indianapolis, I wanted to do something that I never thought I would do but had always lingered in the back of my mind – I was going to join a sorority. When I got my bid to join the Theta Zeta chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA), it changed my life in ways I didn’t think possible. Not only did I meet some of the best friends that I know will be in my life for years on end, but I was blessed with a group of women who would push me to be my best.
The Encouragement of My Sisters
Because I was so torn in career paths and majors, classwork seemed overwhelming. But, my sisters saw characteristics and abilities in me that I didn’t see in myself and helped me find my true passion. Once I changed my major back to communication studies, I knew that was what I wanted. I had a newfound love for my major and my sisters helped me discover that. We would study in the library together for hours and talk about projects we were working on for classes. This made me realize they had helped me find what I wanted to do in college and in my future.
It was my sister’s encouragement that led me to run for my first leadership position. They saw the work I had done for fun with graphic design and a photoshoot with a sister and knew I had leadership potential and passion. After becoming the public relations chairman for our chapter, I had more drive and ambition to let my creativity run free in all aspects of my life. When I had to complete a large media project for one of my classes, a sister volunteered to help me as soon as she heard. With her help and the creativity that I got from my position, I was able to create a digital magazine. Not only did I get a good grade on the project, I actually enjoyed the work which is something I never thought I would say.
“Joining a sorority made me more passionate about my classes and excited for the future.”
Joining a sorority made me more passionate about my classes and excited for the future. My sisters and I always encouraged each other and held each other accountable when we needed it. Having a group of women to support you and help you navigate a college course load made it so much easier. My sisters helped me find my true passion, which in turn helped improve my grades. With their support, college didn’t seem so overwhelming as it had before I transferred. I felt like I had control over my classwork and the future I envisioned after college. For that, I have to thank my Alpha Sigma Alpha sisters.
