Why I Joined a Sorority

"Going through recruitment wasn’t anything that I ever thought I would do. No one in my family was ever in a sorority, and I admittedly didn’t know much about them. The recruitment process introduced me to so many incredible women on my campus, many of whom I became friends with and who pushed me out of my comfort zone."

The prospect of joining a sorority came about during a time when I felt that I needed to make a change in my life. I had just finished my freshman year, and I didn’t feel that I was getting the most out of my college experience. I had spent the entirety of my freshman year in a funk, opting not to participate in school events. Instead, I chose to spend my time in my dorm room.

Making a Change

At the beginning of my sophomore year, I vowed to do something different. I wanted to make new friends, join student organizations and get out of my dorm room – and that’s when I came across sorority recruitment. My friends encouraged me to go for it and we all went through the process together. Eventually, a close friend and I decided to go through recruitment for a new sorority on campus, and I had the opportunity to have really engaging conversations with other college-aged women that I found impactful.

Going through recruitment wasn’t anything that I ever thought I would do. No one in my family was ever in a sorority, and I admittedly didn’t know much about them. The recruitment process introduced me to so many incredible women on my campus, many of whom I became friends with and who pushed me out of my comfort zone.

After I went through recruitment and accepted my bid to Kappa Delta, my college experience totally changed. I was no longer spending all my time in my dorm, but instead spending it with other women

Enjoying the Recruitment Process

I enjoyed my time going through the recruitment process, and it ended up becoming one of the events I looked forward to the most when I became a member. I loved taking the time to learn about the other sororities on my campus, and how the women personally connected to their chapters. As a potential member, recruitment is all about you and helping you find the organization you feel more at home with. Take the time to ask questions and really learn about the women you meet and the chapters you visit.

Although the process can feel overwhelming, the best advice I can give is to be yourself, be honest and be open-minded about the chapters you visit and the women you meet – everyone wants to get to know the real you! If I had the opportunity to go through recruitment again, I absolutely would. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind experience that leads to a lifetime of friendship and networking.
