Recruitment can be a challenging process if you are not prepared! Here are a few things you should know before going through the process.
Pre-Recruitment:
Do your research! It is key by doing your research on your campus’ sororities. This can be done through social media and seeing the information that they post on their own or by going to the national’s accounts. You can also go to the Panhellenic Council’s website and social media accounts to learn more about the process, the specific chapters on your campus, and more.
Understand your values! The biggest part of the whole process is by finding where you feel like home. An important part of all sororities are their values. If you define your own values it will be easier in conversations, decisions, and understanding your wants throughout the process.
Your clothes do NOT define you! It is normal to get caught up in social media, your own thoughts, and seeing what others are wearing. No matter what round you are in and what campus you are at, your outfit doesn’t define you! It should be a way to express yourself and not to worry about what brands others are wearing.
Ask the questions! While going through a round you will be asked questions from women in the chapter, but that doesn’t mean you can’t either. Depending on the round you can ask about their favorite philanthropy event they have, their favorite sisterhood event, one thing they love about the chapter, and more! By asking questions you are learning new things about them but also it shows stuff about you.
Talk to your Recruitment Counselor! These women have gone through the process themselves and understand what you’re going through. They are able to give you advice, lend you an ear, help talk you through decisions, and help you understand what is going to happen. Things can get hectic so don’t hesitate to talk to them.
Things can get emotional! It is completely normal for one to go through many emotions during this process. Nerves, stress, happiness, sadness, and more are all typical emotions to feel. Talk to your Rho Gamma/Gamma Chi about how you’re feeling and if anything happens during your rounds.
During the Process:
Don’t let others influence you! While you may make friends during this process you shouldn’t let how their experience change how you feel about yours. Everyone is different and every experience is different with the process.
Trust your gut! After visiting every chapter during your round, write down your thoughts, opinions, and your gut feeling. This will help you remember things that you might forget and when you are choosing which chapters to drop it will make it easier to make your decision. Your gut feeling is something you shouldn’t ignore and if you need someone to talk to there are many Panhellenic members who are running recruitment that can help you.
Be yourself! No matter where you are in this process, you should always be yourself and stay true to your values. All decisions throughout this process come back to yourself, what you want, and your values. Don’t shape yourself into what a chapter wants or what you think they are wanting.
